Our Work in Ireland

We are delighted to have been shortlisted as Exporter of the Year by Causeway Ireland Scotland Business Exchange (https://causewayexchange.net/).

In the past year, our work in Ireland has brought attention to the opportunities, both regional and national, associated with Ireland’s transition to a net zero economy.

Arklow Bank Wind Park 2

Our report on the potential impacts of Arklow Bank Wind Park 2, a proposed offshore wind farm for the East Coast of Ireland with an expected capacity of 800MW highlighted the job creation opportunities associated with the project in County Wicklow, County Wexford and Ireland as a whole. Over its lifetime the project will contribute €484 million to the economies of Wicklow and Wexford and €773 million to the Irish economy.

Sceirde Rocks Windfarm

We produced a report outlining the opportunities for the West of Ireland and Ireland as a whole associated with the development of what would be Ireland’s first offshore wind farm off the West Coast, a region that will be crucial to meeting the Irish Government’s ambition to install 37GW of offshore wind by 2050.

Biofuels in Ireland

We assessed the economic impacts of the proposed Tarbert Power Station and Platin Power Station, which would run on 100% sustainable biofuel before transitioning to hydrogen. The report outlined the role these projects would play in achieving Ireland’s strategic goals around the transition to net zero and regional economic growth.

Owenreagh and Craignagapple Wind Farms

Our analysis of the potential impacts of the proposed decommissioning and repowering of the Owenreagh Wind Farms and the development of the new Craignagapple Wind Farm, in the local government district of Derry City and Strabane, found that the development and construction of the projects could generate £27.4 million for the economy of Northern Ireland supporting 500 years of employment. The annual economic impact during operations would be £1.4 million, supporting 20 jobs.

Since BiGGAR Economics was established in Scotland in 2002, we have worked with a number of clients and partners across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, including University College Dublin, the Western Development Commission, Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland, The University of Ulster, Invest Northern Ireland and Dublin Offshore. We look forward to building on the relationships we’ve established through our work in Ireland to share best practice in economic development across Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
