BiGGAR Economics, in collaboration with Dublin Offshore Consultants, Lumen Energy and ITPEntergised considered the opportunities and challenges for the development of offshore wind energy activity at Ros a Mhíl in County Galway.
Údarás na Gaeltachta is the regional development authority for the economic, social and cultural development of the Gaeltacht with the overall objective of maintaining Irish as the communal language of the region.
There are strong ambitions for the development of floating offshore wind to the West of Ireland, with a target of 30GW in the Atlantic coats by 2050. Údarás na Gaeltachta was interesting in understanding what the potential benefits would be for the local area if investments were made in the fishing port of Ros a Mhíl to allow it to support the development of the offshore wind sector and add much-needed port capacity on this coastline.
The study considered multiple potential options for the development of the port. In the most ambitious scenario, up to 900 jobs could be created to support the operations and maintenance of 3 GW of installed capacity from bases at Ros a Mhíl.
The executive summary is available to download from the Údarás na Gaeltachta website:
