Economic Impact of UHI

In the lead up to its 10^th anniversary, the University of the Highlands and Islands commissioned BiGGAR Economics to consider its socio-economic and broader impacts within the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Perthshire, and Scotland.

The study found that the partnership contributes around £560 million GVA and supports 6,200 jobs in the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Perthshire and £653 million GVA and 7,200 jobs across the Scottish economy.

For each £1 of income it generates, the University of the Highlands and Islands contributes £5 in economic activity across Scotland.

The report also found that the contribution of the partnership goes well beyond what can be captured by economic indicators. The University of the Highlands and Islands supports “heritage and culture, the economy, the environment, the regional health sector and it offers pathways through tertiary education that give routes to personal and collective growth and development”.

These contributions give the partnership an important role in shaping the future of the region and the path to economic recovery from COVID-19.
