GCU contributes over £1.7 billion globally

BiGGAR Economics was commissioned by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) to carry out an analysis of its economic and social impacts.

The study found that in 2020/21 GCU contributed:

  • £1.7 billion Gross Value Added (GVA) and 14,360 jobs globally
  • £1.4 billion GVA and 14,170 jobs to the UK economy
  • £1.1 billion GVA and 9,760 jobs to the Scottish economy
  • £612 million GVA and 5,390 jobs to the city of Glasgow.

Operating in the context of the economic, social and health inequalities in the population and economy of Glasgow, GCU’s mission is to be the “University for the Common Good”. The study found that, by engaging in a wide range of activities, GCU truly lives to its mission.

“GCU lives its mission to be the University for the Common Good”.

GCU fulfils its mission by:

  • building social capacity through a long-standing commitment to widening access and core initiatives that bring opportunities to children and young people who live in the most disadvantaged areas of Glasgow.
  • placing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the centre of its research work and creating strategic value through its expertise and reputation across several areas including health and wellbeing; poverty and inequalities; sustainable businesses and environments; and industry, innovation and infrastructure.
  • embedding its core values into its role as an employer, an educator, academic partner and thought leader to improve the lives of its students and people in wider society.
  • delivering relevant workforce education and employment-ready graduates through its professionally accredited courses and engagement with employers.

Through its contribution to build social capability and innovation, GCU is a valuable asset for the city of Glasgow. While locally rooted, its ethos and alignment with the SDGs mean that GCU’s reach stretches across the globe.
