Economic Impact of Keadby and Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Stations

BiGGAR Economics was commissioned by SSE Thermal to undertake economic impact assessments of its proposed carbon capture plants and adjoining power stations at Keadby in North Lincolnshire and Peterhead in Aberdeenshire.

These would be the first power stations in the UK with integrated carbon capture, enabling emissions from the highly efficient Combined Cycle Gas Turbines to be captured and stored. This would create a model for the deployment of low carbon technology. In addition, the power plants are expected to generate significant economic benefits.

Keadby Carbon Capture Power Station

Over its lifetime, Keadby Carbon Capture Power Station is expected to contribute £1.2 billion Gross Value Added (GVA) in the UK. In addition, each year of operation it is expected to support:

  • 260 jobs in the local area;
  • 320 jobs in the regional area; and
  • 560 jobs in the UK.

The project will bring particular benefits to the local community.

Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station

Over its lifetime, Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station is expected to contribute £1.2 billion Gross Value Added (GVA) in the UK. In addition, each year of operation it is expected to support:

  • 240 jobs in Aberdeen City and Shire;
  • 290 jobs in Scotland; and
  • 560 jobs in the UK.
